Boambilly Escape
Location: Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. Concept & Features: Boambilly Escape, located in Cradle Mountain in the Lake St Clair National Park, is a modest retreat for creative novelists to immerse themselves in their work while escaping the city's bustling lifestyle. The one-bed, one-bath cabin, provides a sanctuary for free thought and creativity, allowing the occupant to unwind and be absorbed by the breathtaking scenery. The project explores a contemporary perspective on the notion of a mountain-dwelling; through a sophisticated vocabulary used throughout the structure, with each zone accentuating minimalist elegance. The architecture remained harmonious, with continuous approaches to form and structure, enhancing the demand for openness and ease. The retreat is inspired by its alpine surroundings, with structural concrete forms reflecting the tactile jagged peaks and alpine heathland in the background. To achieve a minimalist aesthetic, the materials palette is constrained, with a limited selection of textiles. Large, double-glazed sliding doors allow the exterior to penetrate the interior visually, allowing the scenic backdrops to be juxtaposed against the stark, concrete walls and floors. Concrete is utilized throughout both the exterior and the interior to provide a sharp contrast to the grained wood on the ceiling and cabinetry.
